Choosing a ring is easier once you break it down into four decisions: metal, diamond, style and budget. Here's how to work through each one.
1. Start with the metal
18K white gold and platinum both give a bright, cool-toned finish and suit most skin tones; platinum is denser and more hypoallergenic but shows up as the higher price point. 18K yellow and rose gold read warmer and have become popular again for both engagement and fashion pieces. There's no wrong choice — it comes down to what the wearer already reaches for in their everyday jewellery.
2. Pick the diamond shape and quality
Round brilliant remains the most popular cut for its brightness and versatility, while oval, cushion, emerald and pear shapes suit those who want something a little more individual. For the technical side — carat, cut, colour and clarity — see our Diamond Guide. If budget is a factor, lab-grown diamonds are chemically identical to natural stones and typically cost 30–40% less at the same size and quality.
3. Match the style to how it'll be worn
Engagement rings are usually worn daily, so a secure setting (four or six-claw, or bezel) matters more than it does on a fashion ring worn occasionally. Eternity and half-eternity bands work well as stacking pieces alongside a solitaire. If the ring will sit next to a wedding band, check the two sit flush before you order.
4. Set a budget, then decide where it goes
Most of the cost in a diamond ring sits in the centre stone, so deciding on carat weight first — then choosing the setting and metal to fit what's left — tends to give the best result for the money. We're also happy to quote alternatives at different price points on any piece.
